Forge Mosque Data

Forge's mosque detection includes a built-in map of the world's mosques, so that most checks happen on your iPhone and your location isn't sent anywhere. That map is made from OpenStreetMap data.

The data in the app

Forge's file is a derived database of OpenStreetMap and is offered here under the same licence, ODbL 1.0:

WorldMosques.bin (6.7 MB): 292,415 places of worship tagged amenity=place_of_worship + religion=muslim (nodes, ways and relations, as points), with one name each. SHA-256 5289a726bc09bebf084ca37850e2f09fd70f26007a626d1baf2f14fbfffb75f7.
build_mosque_index.py: the script that builds it, with the file format described at its top.

How it was made

Downloaded from the Overpass API on 26 October 2026 with this query, then packed by the script:

It is refreshed with app updates. Missing or wrong mosques can be fixed on OpenStreetMap itself, and reach Forge with a later update.
